Fish scale collagen vs marine collagen vs bovine collagen — what's actually different?

Most collagen comes from one of three places: cow hide, fish skin, or fish scale. The marketing makes them sound worlds apart. Biologically they are more alike than different — and the distinction that matters most is not the source at all, but whether the collagen is left whole or cut down into a powder. Here is the honest version, and why we chose whole-brewed fish scale.

If you stand in front of a row of collagen supplements at any well-stocked beauty counter in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, you'll see three words doing most of the work: bovine, marine, and fish scale. Each one carries its own connotation. Bovine is the workhorse — the most common, the cheapest, the one most studies were run on. Marine sounds clean and modern. Fish scale sounds even more specific, even more careful. Each label has a story attached.

The biology underneath those stories is more similar than the marketing suggests. All three are primarily Type I collagen. And here is the first thing the labels obscure: whatever the source, nearly all of them arrive in the same form — a hydrolysed peptide powder, the collagen cut into short fragments and spray-dried. Whatever collagen you eat, your body breaks it down into amino acids and small fragments — building blocks — and decides for itself what to build with them. The real differences between the three sources — and they do matter — are dietary restrictions, sustainability, taste, and what else ends up in the bottle. This is the honest version.

The three sources, plainly

Bovine collagen is made from cattle — specifically the hide and bones. The hide is treated, the connective-tissue collagen extracted, then enzymatically hydrolysed into smaller peptides. Cattle farming yields a large, predictable supply, which is why bovine collagen is by far the most common source on the global market and historically the cheapest per gram.

Marine collagen is a catch-all term covering anything sourced from fish or other sea creatures. In practice, the overwhelming majority of "marine collagen" on retail shelves is made from fish skin — a byproduct of fish-fillet processing. The skin is cleaned, the collagen extracted, and then hydrolysed the same way bovine collagen is.

Fish scale collagen is a specific subset of marine collagen. Instead of fish skin, the source material is the scales — also a byproduct of edible-fish processing, also otherwise discarded. The biology is similar to fish skin collagen; the supply chain story is slightly different.

There is a fourth thing the supplement aisle calls "collagen" that is not actually collagen at all, and we will get to it.

Why this conversation is mostly about Type I

Your skin, tendons, ligaments, and most of the connective tissue holding your body together are made of collagen — but not just one kind of it. Type I collagen accounts for roughly 80 to 90 per cent of the collagen in your dermis. Type III is the next most abundant in skin, then Type IV in the basement membrane between skin layers. Cartilage is mostly Type II. Bone is mostly Type I again, with a small amount of Type V.

When you buy a collagen product marketed for skin, hair, and nails, you are almost always buying primarily Type I collagen. Bovine contains both Type I and Type III. Marine and fish scale are predominantly Type I. The skin research these products lean on tends to be conducted on Type I or Type I/III collagen, regardless of source.

The reason this matters: people sometimes worry that fish scale collagen "isn't the right kind" because it is marketed so specifically. It is the right kind for the use case. The Type I collagen in fish scale and the Type I collagen in cow hide are more alike than they are different.

Bovine — abundant, cheap, well-studied

Bovine collagen has the longest research track record, because it has been used in supplements the longest. Most of the older clinical trials on oral collagen for skin elasticity used bovine peptides; frequently cited examples include Proksch and colleagues (2014, Skin Pharmacology and Physiology) and Asserin and colleagues (2015, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology). Taken together, that body of research suggests hydrolysed collagen peptides at clinically relevant doses can produce modest, consistent improvements in skin hydration and elasticity over an eight-to-twelve-week window. We will not pretend that literature away — and you should be wary of any brand, ours included, that does. It is worth being clear, though, that almost all of it was run on hydrolysed peptides, not on a whole brew.

The honest case for bovine: it has the most data behind it, and it is the least expensive option per gram. The honest case against: dietary restrictions (some Hindu and Muslim consumers will not consume bovine sources, and the slaughter and processing must meet halal standards for those who require it); a meaningful environmental footprint per kilogram of finished collagen; and the historical concern about bovine spongiform encephalopathy, which — though now well-mitigated by sourcing standards — has left a perception that lingers in some markets.

Marine — what the label usually means

Most "marine collagen" you encounter is fish-skin collagen. Tilapia and pollock skin are the two most common sources globally; in Asia, deep-sea fish skin is more common in higher-end products. The processing is similar to bovine: clean, extract, hydrolyse.

Two things are usually said about marine collagen that deserve a careful look.

The first is that marine collagen has a "smaller molecular weight" than bovine and therefore "works better." The molecular-weight difference is real but small, and whether it means anything in a real body is debated. Treat "low molecular weight" for what it is — a description of what hydrolysis does to a protein, not a benefit in itself. The marine "bioavailability" claim is real in a laboratory measurement and mostly marketing on a shelf.

The second is that marine collagen tastes fishy. This is not inherent to marine collagen; it is a function of processing quality. Well-processed marine collagen has effectively no taste of its own. Poorly processed material can carry a residual fish note, which is then masked by flavour additives. If a marine collagen product tastes strongly of fish, the issue is the processing, not the sea.

The dietary-restriction story for marine collagen is more favourable than for bovine in much of Asia. It is generally compatible with Hindu dietary norms. For Muslim consumers, the question becomes whether the suppliers and the processing meet halal standards — some marine collagen is halal-certified, some is not, and that needs to be checked product by product.

Fish scale collagen — the upcycling argument

Fish scale collagen is biologically similar to fish skin collagen. The Type I collagen in scales and the Type I collagen in skin are not meaningfully different in profile. Where the two differ is the supply story.

Fish scales are, in most edible-fish processing, a true byproduct. The fillets go to restaurants and supermarkets; the scales go to the bin. A company that sources fish scales for collagen is upcycling material that would otherwise be discarded. The sustainability case for fish scale is therefore stronger than for bovine, and slightly stronger than for fish skin depending on the supplier (some fish-skin operations are genuinely byproduct-driven; others process whole fish for the skin).

A second, practical consideration: in our own kitchen, simmering fish scales brews up with a cleaner taste than skin. This is anecdotal and depends on processing, but it is consistent with what other liquid-collagen makers report. For something meant to be drunk rather than swallowed in a capsule, taste is not a small thing.

What fish scale collagen is not: a different kind of collagen at the molecular level, or a "purer" Type I, or a clinically distinct supplement. It is a Type I marine collagen with a particular supply chain.

So fish scale is our source — but the choice we care about more comes next: we leave it whole. We simmer the scales slowly with goji, longan, lemongrass, pandan and red dates, and we never cut the collagen down into a powder. Chill a bottle and it sets into a jelly on its own — something no hydrolysed peptide, from any of these three sources, can do. The fish scale is one deliberate choice; keeping it whole is the one that defines the bottle.

What about "plant-based collagen"?

Plants do not produce collagen. There is no botanical source of true collagen anywhere in the supplement industry, because collagen is, by definition, a protein found in animals.

What "plant-based" or "vegan collagen" products supply is a blend of amino acids (typically glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline) plus cofactors (vitamin C, zinc, copper) that your body uses to make its own collagen. That is a meaningfully different product from any animal collagen. You are giving your body building blocks for its own collagen rather than eating ready-made collagen — which, to be fair, is partly what happens with any collagen once it is digested anyway.

Whether that is better, worse, or simply different depends on your goals. For someone with strict dietary restrictions, a plant-based amino-acid supplement may be the only option. For someone who wants to eat collagen itself — as a food, the way it has been eaten for generations — the plant-based product is not the same thing.

The honest framing: "vegan collagen" is a category name driven by marketing. The underlying products are useful in their own right, but they are not an equivalent substitute for collagen.

So which one should I drink?

The honest answer is that source matters less than people think. The things that actually decide whether a collagen does what it claims are not the animal it came from:

  • Form — whole or hydrolysed. A whole brew you can watch set into a jelly; a powder asks to be taken on the label’s word. This is the difference the source names distract from, and the one we think matters most.
  • Consistency. The collagen you actually take every morning, for months, does more than the collagen with the biggest number on a label that sits unfinished in a cupboard. Give any collagen 90 days before you judge it; results vary from person to person.
  • Freshness. The longer collagen sits dried on a shelf, the more it has been through. A fresh, small-batch brew, drunk within its short life, never takes that journey.
