Fish-scale, marine, bovine: five things that actually differ
Fish-scale collagen is the default in Singapore and Malaysia, and the reasons given for that are usually the wrong ones. Five differences that are real — and one that is mostly marketing.

This page used to be titled "five reasons fish-scale collagen is superior". It is not superior, and pretending otherwise would undercut everything else we say. But the sources do differ, and the differences are worth knowing.
First, the thing they have in common: fish-scale, other marine sources and bovine hide are all overwhelmingly Type I collagen — the same structural protein. Biologically they are far more alike than the marketing implies.
1. Dietary and religious acceptability
The real reason fish leads in this region. Bovine and porcine sources run into halal considerations and personal dietary limits for a great many households here. Fish sidesteps both. This is not a nutritional advantage — it is a practical one, and it is decisive.
2. Culinary heritage
鱼鳞冻 is a dish here, not an import. Fish-scale jelly has been made in home kitchens across southern China and Southeast Asia for generations. Bovine collagen has no equivalent domestic tradition in this part of the world.
3. Amino-acid profile
Marine collagens tend to run slightly higher in glycine and proline and lower in hydroxyproline than bovine. This is a genuine measurable difference. What it is not is a demonstrated difference in outcome for you — we have never seen evidence that would support saying so.
4. Setting behaviour
Fish collagen sets and melts at lower temperatures than mammalian collagen. It is why a fish-scale jelly firms up in the fridge and turns liquid on the counter — the behaviour that lets a brewed jelly demonstrate what is in it.
5. What it is made from
Scales are a by-product of fish already caught for food, in an industry that discards millions of tonnes of them a year. Using them is closer to thrift than to novelty.
And the one that is mostly marketing
Absorption. You will be told marine collagen has a lower molecular weight and is absorbed more efficiently. Molecular weight depends on how a manufacturer processed the material, not on which animal it came from — and either way, all of it is digested into amino acids and short peptides before it goes anywhere. It is a processing claim dressed up as a source claim, and we do not make it.
